Mathalicious
Most kids start to lose interest in math during middle school which is why that it is important that we as middle school teachers find a way to keep them from zoning out or losing interest. One of the things that we have talked about this year is helping students to learn by making connections to the real world. Mathalicious is a STEM Education app that I found that contains interactive activities for kids while using examples that they may be able to relate to better than textbook examples. I chose this specific app because it is also a way to help teachers address the Common Core Standards in a way that may be more appealing to students. I have only seen a couple of apps that related to the standards, and appealed to me as well. Just like any other great app, it does have a free trial to see how it works for everyone individually!

Mathalicious is a resource that I would look into using for my classroom because it could be used to launch into a new topic or review the topic by using tasks that either the students have to find the equation or pattern or whatever the topic is or use all of the information they have learned about the topic to go through the task. Using it as a review gives the teacher some knowledge of where the student is at with the topic. I do like feature where you fill in the grade, topic, and what standard you are trying to cover, and then it gives you all of the lessons it has instead of having to search through lessons trying to find one that fits. This resource is similar to my resource Discovery Education Techbook in both resources are using relatable examples like with Mathalicious the lesson Pic Me is using social media “likes” to teach regression models. Techbook uses similar experiences for learning also.

I found it interesting how you said middle grades math is the time to grasp their attention and not lose it. I think Mathelicious would help students relate what they are learning to the outside world and they would benefit from having STEM implemented. What STEM and Mathelicious do a good job of is engaging students and maintaining their attention. I cannot wait to use this in my classroom as a way to develop a lesson that will keep students wanting more and more fraction questions.
